Start-Up New Hampshire Business plan competition brings out entrepreneurs with $250,000 in prizes

Nanotechnology carried the day, winning the $130,000 top prize for NanoComp of Lebanon in the second annual Start-Up NH Business Plan competition yesterday.

The top prize followed NanoComp’s $30,000 Manufacturing category prize, which it won Monday. Carbon nanotubes are very small, strong, light-weight fibers with potential uses in body armor for the military, structural composites and electrical conductors.

"Our major concept is to grow very long carbon nanotubes, so that distinguishes us from the rest of the industry," said David Lashmore, chief technical officer for NanoComp. "Our nanotubes so far are in the neighborhood of many centimeters long; everybody else has lengths much, much smaller than human hair."
