Cluster initiatives get boost and look to future

A consulting company will help boost the state’s cluster strategy, which assists businesses across nine industries to network and find solutions to their industry’s problems.

In March, ICF Consulting of San Francisco, began working with the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), the agency which facilitates the cluster strategy, to enhance the program.

ICF Consulting helps states implement economic development strategies. The company will evaluate industries in Connecticut that need an injection of resources and identify other business fields that may have been ignored in the past.

"It’s important to us to make sure the economy keeps growing and expanding," said James Watson, spokesman at the DECD.

Under the program, which is in its sixth year, businesses grouped together by industry collaborate with the state on various issues. The nine industries covered are: agriculture, aerospace component manufacturing, bioscience. insurance and financial services, maritime, metal, plastic, software and information technology and tourism.

The agency provides and finds funding sources for these groups to aid in their implementation of programs which help their sustainability and productivity.
