600 Wisconsin plastics companies uniting into a knowledge-based industrial cluster

Because the U.S. plastics industry is fragmented, Wisconsin has a strategic opportunity to become its hub.

That might sound overly ambitious for a state that ranks 12th in the country in shipments at $10 billion, but it is the kind of big thinking the state needs to reposition itself in the global economy.

The idea of uniting the 600 Wisconsin plastics companies into a knowledge-based industrial cluster has grown out of the four economic summits that used clusters as an organizing concept for economic development. That same kind of an initiative to center a fragmented national industry in this state is well under way in the Wisconsin Printing Cluster.
