World Wide Web cut down to size – Local Matters’ new searches keep results near home

Move over, Yahoo and Google.

Make room for Local Matters.

Three companies have teamed to launch a Denver business peddling technology that will let consumers use the Internet to troll for eateries, auto-repair shops and other businesses located smack in their own backyard.

Local Matters and its CEO – MapQuest founder Perry Evans – are hoping to cash in on the next frontier of Internet search technology: local search.

"The Internet still hasn’t been made very relevant for the everyday life of the consumer," Evans said in an interview.

Companies such as Douglas County-based phone book publisher Dex Media, SBC Communications and others are expected to deploy Local Matters’ technology on their own Web sites and under their own brand names.

Local Matters’ launch comes as Yahoo, Google and other tech heavyweights are moving into local search. The idea: give consumers access to online information about nearby businesses and establishments – vs. what’s out there in the far-flung world of cyberspace.

It’s the kind of information available today through the Yellow Pages and 411 directory assistance.

"The Holy Grail is having Google or Yahoo-like searches be relevant to where you are," said Dan Miller, senior analyst for Opus Research, a San Francisco market research firm specializing in interactive services.
