Our View: There’s no single solution for rural Idaho

Rural Idaho is diversifying. The state’s new Profile of Rural Idaho makes this emerging trend clear.

No longer is the story of rural Idaho simply the story of forestry, mining and farming jobs disappearing. While the impact of those old problems persists, emerging conditions reflect increasing complexity in rural counties. Small hobby farms are increasing. So are big dairies. Hispanics make up increasing percentages of the population. So do people over 80. Thinly populated counties are becoming homes for urban commuters.

And while counties like Clark and Clearwater are still losing people, counties like Teton and Blaine are finding success in growth. That’s good news.
