Idaho and Montana tax burdens low

Idaho ranks 47th in percent of income paid to government Montana ranks 35th.

Those who waited until April 15 to file their income taxes probably did so because they owed money.

For those still depressed by that, here’s good news: The average Idaho taxpayer was working for himself for the first time last week, while Tax Freedom Day didn’t come until this week for the average U.S. citizen, according to the nonprofit Tax Foundation.

A few miles away, in Washington, taxpayers won’t stop working for the government until Wednesday.

"I’m very pleased to see that Idaho continues to be attractive for new business, based upon our low tax rate compared to other states," said Steve Griffitts, president of Jobs Plus, Kootenai County’s private economic development agency.

Idaho, which is 47th in the percentage of income paid in local and state taxes, is one of only a dozen states the Tax Foundation credits with paying its taxes by April 9. Montana, 35th, is another. Washington is seventh highest, with a total of 30.1 percent going to taxes in spite of having no income tax.
