Portable technology – Science teacher John Graves wins Toyota grant to provide Palm Pilots for his students

John Graves knows how to teach science – it’s getting kids interested in reading that’s a bit harder.

But Graves, a science teacher at Monforton School for 23 years, hopes he’s found a way to slip reading into his science curriculum by giving his students hand-held computers to use on an ecology project. Graves received a $9,700 grant this month from Toyota Motor Sales to buy more than 20 Palm Pilots for his students.

"They’re used to the technology, so if some of the reading information is available electronically, they may be more apt to read it," Graves, 51, said in a telephone interview.

Graves’ proposal to use Palm Pilots for field work earned him one of the 50 Toyota Tapestry grants awarded nationwide. The grant program recognizes science teachers who develop innovative programs in environmental or physical science, or who come up with a way to use science to improve reading and writing skills.
