New jobs, new excitement blow into Wheatland County

Now that it appears a large wind farm will be built between Judith Gap and Harlowton, residents of both communities are waiting eagerly for construction to begin.

The sentiment most often heard in both places is joy that something good will come from the winds that have plagued them for generations.
Teri and Jeff Sell, owners of Central Lumber and Hardware in Harlowton and leaders of the Harlowton Chamber of Commerce, react favorably to the possibility of a wind farm north of town on Highway 191.

Jeff Sell, president of the Harlowton Chamber of Commerce and a Harlowton businessman, said he has not heard of a single opponent to the wind farm.

Alice Bair, a member of the Judith Gap City Council and the Central Montana Water Authority board, said she, too, has not talked to anyone in Judith Gap who is opposed to the wind farm.

Fellow Judith Gap City Councilwoman Rita Swartz laughs and says if anyone is against it, they aren’t very vocal about it.

“We’re just waiting for it to happen,” said Bair. “We’ve been talking about it for five years. I think we ought to get it done.”
