The coffee capitalists – Montana Mudd came to town and changed the city’s rules

Several years ago, Joslyn Murphy wanted to open a small, drive-through coffee bar in Helena. She wasn’t the first local entrepreneur to approach city officials with the idea of setting a semi-permanent coffee stand off a busy street and offering quick, convenient coffee and espresso drinks.

As others had heard before her, Murphy was told "no."

City officials said Murphy had two choices. She could operate a small, fully mobile coffee shop and avoid many city building codes. But that option would bring with it other requirements – including that Murphy would have to move her building from its site after every business day.

"Mountain Mudd is rather relentless. They didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer."

"I’m so mad I’m spitting nails," Murphy said.
