Overseas company to buy Advanced Silicon Materials Inc. (ASiMI) of Butte

The Japanese company that owns Advanced Silicon Materials Inc. announced Thursday that it will sell most of its interest in ASiMI to a Norway-based firm.

Komatsu, owner of the polysilicon and silane gas manufacturer located southwest of Butte, has signed a letter of intent to sell 75 percent of its ownership stake in ASiMI to Renewable Energy Corp., said Mike Kerschen of Butte, ASiMI’s president and chief executive.

The two inter-national companies are already acquainted after partnering in a joint venture in Moses Lake, Wash., to produce polysilicon for the solar cell industry.

The sale — the purchase price was undisclosed — is set to close in late spring and hinges on completion of negotiations and conditions as well as regulatory approval. The deal has been in the works since last fall.

ASiMI employs more than 400 in Butte.
