Good deal – Total taxes in Montana are less than Idaho, North Dakota and Wyoming

Montana’s business and property owners are paying far more of the overall taxes needed to run state government as natural resource income has plummeted, a Montana State University economics professor said.

But Montana taxpayers are still getting a pretty good deal when compared to most states, Douglas Young, a professor who specializes in tax issues and policy, said Wednesday.

"If you go back to 1982, our taxes were the fifth highest as a percent of income," Young said, comparing Montana to all 50 states. "Now they’re the 39th highest."

In per capita dollars, total taxes in Montana are less than Idaho, North Dakota and Wyoming, he told the more than 200 people at the University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research’s annual economic outlook seminar.
