ILX, other high-tech businesses thriving

By RON TSCHIDA Chronicle Staff Writer

ILX Lightwave returned to profitability in 2004, the company announced last week, following several years of losses and layoffs.

Larry Johnson, the company’s president and CEO, said ILX was forced to refocus on its core business after the downturn in the telecommunications market in 2001.

But that refocus has paid off. The company, which makes laser diode instruments and test equipment, had sales for the six months ending in December that were 30 percent higher than the same period in 2003, ILX said in a news release.

"We believe that the next few years will prove to be some of the best ever for ILX Lightwave in particular and the optics industry in general," Johnson said in the release.
