D and Me Toys LLP – Stevensville wooden toy company, others find business booming on Net

Years of hard work are starting to pay off for Mary Hurley and her husband, Don, as their handmade wooden toy business expands. The Stevensville couple started D and Me Toys LLP http://www.dandme.com in the late 1970s as a hobby, and sales are now booming with the help of the Internet.

Back in mid-December, Mary Hurley stood behind her loaded table at the craft fair on the ground floor of the University Center at the University of Montana. She was in a prime spot near the entrance to The Bookstore.

Her wares were toy fire trucks, trains and cars that her husband manufactured in Stevensville. Their company name is D and Me Toys LLP. The D is for Mary’s husband Don Hurley. She’s the Me.

"Sales (at the UC) were OK. Not bad," she said.

But altogether, fair sales – once a staple for the cottage craft industry in general and for the Hurleys in particular – were nothing compared to the business the semi-retired couple did over the Internet this year.
