Rebuilt computers go to kids in need

Two men delivered free, rebuilt computers on Christmas Day to children whose families lack money to buy computers for their homes. ‘‘Ho ho ho,” Michael Erickson called out as he carried a large box into a house. ‘‘Merry Christmas!”

About 85 families in Billings and elsewhere in Montana received computers from Computers 4 Kids during the holidays, said Erickson, director of the nonprofit organization.

Computers 4 Kids accepts used machines from businesses and individuals. Then two volunteers refurbish the equipment.

‘‘Our goal was to hit 300 this year, and I think we’re going to hit that and then some,” Erickson said.

Computer4Kids

http://www.computer4kids.us/

As we enter the 21st century, it is evident that without computer skills and knowledge, kids will get left behind as they progress through school and into the workforce.

Realizing the necessity of computer knowledge, it is the mission of Computer4Kids to get computers into the hands of those who need them most; kids who don’t have one, and can’t afford to buy one.

Computer4Kids started when our founder, Mike Erickson, purchased some Apple computers and gave them away to needy children.

In 2002, PC’s were added to our repertoire, and have become our most requested and donated items.

We take donated surplus equipment, and depending on the condition, we may turn it right around as a complete system. Otherwise, we repair, replace or refurbish parts as necessary until we have complete systems. We then take the completed system, and install basic programs, along with Microsoft’s Windows 98 operating system.

We accept most working equipment, including modems, scanners, printers, monitors, speakers and other peripherals.
