Hundreds apply for Centene jobs in Great Falls

It was just a month or so ago that the Centene Corp. said it would open a claims processing center in Great Falls.

While there have been plenty of headlines about land, buildings and infrastructure related to the project, the biggest news is unfolding less publicly.

Interviews for the first batch of jobs with Centene begin this week. So far, the interest in working for the company appears strong.

"We have over 250 resumes as of this morning," Barbara Hardy, a staffer at the Job Service Work Force Center in Great Falls, said at midweek.

While Centene eventually plans to have 250 workers in the center, it was unclear how many jobs will be filled in the first round of hiring. Calls to Centene human resources officials were not returned late last week.

Hardy said the Job Service will scale back its recruitment efforts to allow time to process the big batch of resumes.

Centene has been advertising for several types of jobs, including a human resources manager, claims analysts, auditors, trainers and administrative assistants.

If the number of local folks who could land jobs is uncertain, where they will work is not.

Centene has agreed to lease 10,000 square feet in the Strain Building at 400 Central Ave. as a temporary location while a permanent home is being built on the south edge of town.

Speaking of Centene, the St. Louis-based company got positive press recently in Investor’s Business Daily.

The business newspaper noted that a trend of states outsourcing the management of Medicaid programs is helping Centene.

"Managing the care of the poor doesn’t exactly sound like a win-win business proposition," the story begins. "The way Centene does it, however, shows that government mandates, social services and profits can coexist and even thrive."

Centene manages Medicaid programs in five states. The article notes the impending opening of the Great Falls center, saying the company’s move is an "indication of its growth plans."
