Positive Systems of Whitefish Lands Homeland Security Contract

Positive Systems will soon play a crucial role in enhancing the safety and security of many Montana cities.

The Montana Department of Administration, Information Technology Services Division, on behalf of the GIS Subcommittee of the Montana Homeland Security Task Force recently awarded Positive Systems http://www.possys.com a contract to acquire aerial imagery of thirteen populated areas across the state. The imagery will be used to identify and collect geospatial information about structures, transportation, infrastructure, facilities, and other information relative to multiple geographical information systems (GIS) applications. These “mapping” applications will ultimately support various governmental, municipal, tribal, and emergency management activities.

Bringing the Homeland Security project to fruition represents nearly a year long collaboration of local, state and federal agencies. Spearheading the effort was State GIS Coordinator, Stu Kirkpatrick. Reflecting on the project, Kirkpatrick stated, “I am pleased to be able to leverage Homeland Security funding to provide local emergency responders large scale imagery to assist in both planning and response to incidents that affect the lives of Montana’s citizens. I am also pleased to be able to work with a local Montana firm like Positive Systems, meaning the funding not only assists emergency response efforts but is being used to spur important economic development in Montana’s growing technology sector.”

The initial contract award was in the amount of $180, 000 though the project is anticipated to grow as participating local governmental agencies have the option to expand their respective areas. Cities currently involved in the project include: Billings, Bozeman, Cut Bank, Glendive, Great Falls, Hamilton, Havre, Kalispell, Lewistown, Livingston, Miles City, Missoula and Sidney. The project is slated to begin on April 15th, 2004 with a planned completion date of December 31st, 2004.
