Frontier Airlines returns to Billings

Frontier Airlines is returning to Billings.

Beginning May 23 the Denver-based airline is adding two daily flights to Billings Logan International Airport.

Frontier’s regional jet service called Frontier JetExpress will fly 70-seat CRJ-700 planes to Billings. Frontier handles the marketing and scheduling for Frontier JetExpress while Horizon Airlines operates and flies the JetExpress planes.

The current Frontier Air was formed in 1994 and flew to Billings for about a year. The carrier stopped flying to Billings to build up its business by focusing on the nation’s top 25 markets.

"Now, we’re at the point where we can go back to some of the destinations we served before," said Frontier spokesman Joe Hodas. "We’ve got a much bigger network, so we can service Billings better."

The Denver-to-Billings flights leave at 10:40 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The Billings-to-Denver planes depart at 6 a.m. and 12:40 p.m.

The carrier is offering introductory one-way rates of $99 on the off-peak days of Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Peak travel on the alternate days will cost $119 one-way. The tickets must be purchased by April 7 and cannot be transferred or refunded.

In addition to restarting the Billings flights, Frontier is initiating service between Denver and Nashville and Spokane.

The airline also is adding flights to its most popular existing routes between Denver and Dallas, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Atlanta.

Billings Assistant Aviation Manager Tom Binford said adding 140 seats to Billings per day should drive prices down somewhat. He said Frontier’s move is following aviation trends.

"I think Frontier is trying to get some additional feed into their Denver operation and markets like Billings provide that feed," he said.

With the added destinations, Frontier and Frontier JetExpress will be flying 39 aircraft to 44 cities in 22 states and to five Mexican cities.
